There are certainly questions you have about how to get the most out of the HALO. So, take your time and learn all there is to know about it. We hope you enjoy our site and take a moment to drop us a line.
In depth Q and A about DISC IN THE DARK's HALO.
All HALOs have a built-in rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery (480mAh). It is good for about 300 charges before the capacity will start to fade.
The HALO has a USB-C plug through which you can charge the HALO. This allows you to charge it at home or on the go. If your charging brick can push out more than 1.5A of current, then you can also charge your HALO while you are using it.
One battery charge you get about 18 minutes of high-power illumination. At 2 seconds per charge, that is over 500 glow-ups. If you set each trigger to light for 10 seconds (the max), then you get more than 100 glow-ups on a charge. That means you can double-bogey at all 18 holes and still have juice left over.
Short answer: No.
However, it is important to point out that the battery life will probably not determine the ultimate life of your HALO. You will probably have worn your HALO completely out by the time the battery starts to struggle. For example, standard buttons and switches on most electronic devices have a rated lifetime of 100,000 actuation cycles. Using a two-second energize time for your HALO, your battery should last around 150,000 button pushes on the remote.
That, my friend, is a lot of disc golf!
Or put the HALO into "always on" mode; it will emit 1/10th of the brightness (which is still plenty) and will stay lit for over 3 hours.
Each HALO comes with a paired fob. However, the HALO comes with some added functions. You can do whatever additional pairing or unpairing you want. For example, you can have an additional fob paired to multiple HALOs for use when you are carrying more than one in my bag. When dividing the HALOs between friends, you can pass out the fobs that only turn on a single HALO.
Each HALO can hold up to 5 transmitter key codes. There is no limit to the number of HALOs that can be triggered by one fob. You set it up how you like.
In addition, there is an “always on” mode that doesn’t require the fob. The light is at 10% power and is turned on or off by the power switch. It can go 3+ hours in that mode.
Replacements are always available for purchase. If your local disc golf store carries them, then you won't have to change anything. Just re-pair the new remote and you are good to go. If you can't get a new HALO remote right away, though, you can set the Trigger Timing to 0 seconds. That will put the HALO into "always on" mode, which doesn't require a fob. It is turned on and off just with the power switch.
Just like under normal operation, you can leave it in your bag like this for the whole game. Leave it on. The light in the "always on" mode is at 10% power - which is still plenty! It can stay on for 3+ hours like this—or, if you plug in a USB-C charging cable and brick, it can stay on as long as you need it to.
Think about the last time you lost a disc. What time of day was it? For most players, it is dusk/twilight. It's when you can see the basket and the fairway just fine, but then you shank your disc into the bushes - into the shadows. Then you’re in trouble. In low light, you can't tell the difference between blue, neon orange, or leafy green. Using a glow disc at dusk will prevent this from happening!
We have tested these HALOs a lot, and hard. However, as we have only recently made or first release of the product to the public, the HALO is certainly going to get some harsh treatment and abuse that we did not think to test. We will be prompt and thorough in our response to all warranty claims. If some unexpected patterns emerge, we may decide to introduce minor upgrades to the design (e.g. 1.1, 1.2, etc.) before the 2.0 launch.
